ITS SURE BEEN INTERESTING SO FAR THIS OFF SEASON ON BP.C SOME HOT TOPICS AND SOME NOT SO HOT. HERE IS ABBY PAPPYS TAKE ON THINGS. WHATS YOURS?
WHERE IS THE HOBBY HEADED? ----- AS THE YEARS GO ON THE WEIGHTS AND GROWERS CONTINUE TO GET BETTER? ITS ONLY NATURAL THAT GROWERS WILL HAVE MORE AND BIGGER PUMPKINS TO COMPETE WITH AND WILL TRAVEL TO MANY WEIGH-OFFS.LEAVING SOME LOCAL GROWERS FARTHER BACK IN THE WEIGH-OFF PACK.ITS UP TO CLUBS TO FIND A WAY TO REWARD THEIR LOCAL GROWERS WHILE AT THE SAME TIME NOT CLOSING OUT THE COMPETITION TO BETTER GROWERS TRAVELING TO THEIR GPC SITE.
SELLING SEEDS FOR PROFIT ? ----- I PERSONALLY WOULD NOT JUST SELL MY SEEDS FOR THE SAKE OF IN POCKET MONEY. I WOULD HOWEVER DONATE SEEDS FIRST FOR CLUB AUCTIONS ,THEN CHARITY AUCTIONS AND LASTLY WILL ALWAYS RETURN GROWERS BUBBLE PACKS WHENEVER I HAVE THE SEEDS TO DO SO.
HIDING SEED COUNTS ? ----- NEVER HEARD OF IT AND DO NOT BELIEVE IT EXISTS. THE TOP GROWERS IN THE WORLD WILL SEND YOU A SEED OR TWO IF REQUESTED. MOST JUST WANT TO KNOW THAT YOUR PLANNING ON PLANTING IT, NOT COLLECTING FOR A LATER DATE.THATS JUST THE WAY MANY OF TODAYS TOP GROWERS SEE IT. "IF YOU PLANT IT ? IT WILL COME". BESIDES SEEDS DO NO GOOD SITTING IN A OWNERS DRAWER NOW DO THEY?
WHATS YOUR BEEF? ASK ABBY PAPPY HERE.

Dear Abby Pappy,
If I have a good seed count, and I'm able to donate seeds to club auctions, charity auctions, and even after filling bubbles I still have some seeds left, is it OK to donate seeds to an auction to raise funds for "UFC Cage Fight- Wiz vs. Biz at the Las Vegas GPC seminar"?
The CircusCircus wants to hold the fight on saturday night after the awards ceremony, but right now, they are a little short on cash.

well...im not one to argue but...(cough-cough)....perhaps its those 40 year ago values and good times and the people that were created by them that are in a large part responsible for the situations today?

Perhaps the older you get the more cynical you become. Or how about ignorance is bliss? When we are young we tend not to have a care in the world. All of life is ahead of us. So going back 40 years is just sticking your head in the sand, IMHO. It is what it is enjoy and make the most of it. Period!

Dear Abby Pappy,
Here is my problem. I spend most my time growing the RMGVG club, creating the newsletter, rallying the troopZ, a GPC steering club member and I am always typing on BP...... wanting to pay attention to my lovely wife.......Plus I got me a new job too.....SeemZ I am always spinning around trying to do something.....BUT I really want to also grow a new State record and get my name on that RMGVG trophy so I can keep it for one year, instead of always giving it to someone else....What should I do and What seed would you recommend I grow to do this...??
Signed.... DIizZZY WiZzzzy in Littleton

Here's my BEEF.....After a weak first year, I've got no one to blame for the short comings of my patch. Now that bites! It's not my lazy a.. fault! I worked hard to send out SASBE's for some great seeds, I sent in that soil sample (although I forgot to check the recommendation box), Only drowned a couple dozen seeds tring get those stupid things to germinate, accidentally planted a couple of them the wrong direction. They didn't like being dug up and turned around, but that wasn't my fault my A.D.D. was acting up! I don't think Mother Nature was fair to me, but next year I'll have the very best seeds you can get for free and Joe Van Biggrower will come hold my hand and I'll have a first place Giant Pumpkin for BFW!! OH yeah, I got to bring that skunk cap back to BFW!!! That's my BEEf and I'm sticking to it! BSD, David

Abby Pappy, any advice for BDS(LOL) (Big Show Dog)? It is correctly...BWF(Bear Wallow Farms)...not BFW!!! And we want him to grow a Slunger!!! Peace, Wayne PS..it's a lil different at small weighoff's like BWF!!! We don't have a 40 or 25 year history, but have made advances at our lil weighoff...every year, since we started 5 years ago!!! More pkns & melons weighed this year than ever b/4!!! Thanks again!!!! Peace, Wayne

I want to use egg shells for calcium next year. If I clean the shells, lightly heat them in the oven, crush them tell there almost to a powder using a food processer or blender, then put them in the garden, won't the calcium be absorbed this year? because I read it will take a year for the shells to disolve and the plant to absorb it. I don't really want to buy a calcium product. Also, would old bananas (the kind saved for banana bread)brown black, be used for calcium? when they are old they fall apart real easy, so could you put them in a blender with water, mix, strain, pour mixture into garden?

Dear Abby Pappy, Can you tell me why that Wisconsin Pumpkin was not filled with Cheese? I was really disappointed. Are any Wisconsin Pumpkins filled with cheese or is that just a myth? I would hate to stop searching if it is not a myth. Thanks, Rob

Pap, who was the pollinator of Rons 1789 pumpkin, Lot 21 of the Connecticut Giant Squash & Pumpkin Growers - Night 1 sold it as the 1789 Wallace (1725 Harp X Sib.). The GPC auction lot 19 list the 1789 as the 1725 Harp X with the 1810 Stevens. Thanks Marco

marco (polo?) lol ---- rons 1789 freak was pollinated with the 1810 stevens . we lost the 1810 plant fairly early on due to a soil problem. the pumpkin had a great shape and may work well anyways as a pollinator into rons 1725. ps---my 1647 was a 1725 x 1725 sib. this may be where the confusion is.the pollon for my 1725 sib came from rons 1789 freak (1725). klancy --- if she wont take the milk willingly? drill 1/16 inch hole in the stem, rig up an upside down bottle of milk with feeder tubing attached from bottle to hole in stem. then she has no choice. rob --- no cheese in those wisconsin pumpkins that i know of but,ya never knows--lol---those guys are tricky out there.i think though they just pour cheeze wiz over the top of the soil before spring till. john d--- your just not trying hard enough. id add even more chicken manure, cow manure, pig manure (all as fresh as possible of course )leaf compost, anything and everything. shes gotta blow sooner or later. -lol

The rumor of Pap posing in an orange thong in the pumpkin patch has been around for at least a couple of years.
I think a signed photo could be auctioned off to benefit OAF, bids starting at $500.

Dear Abby Pappy, The thing that I will be missing about this sport/hobby is the people. Even though I'm not growing anymore I'm still going to Vegas just to meet some of these quirky and not so quirky growers. Call me crazy, but I love the people more than my seeds.
