So what is the proper way to bury vines? being the inquisative type, I didn't just tear out my vines and throw them away, I looked at how they developed roots. I used a light peat/compost mix to bury vines about 1 inch deep and only one set of roots developed. There was no second set at each leaf node, just one set off the bottom of the vine. Is there a proper depth? Was my potting soil to light? I avoid trenching because my soil is heavy clay and doesn't drain well.

I done a few different ways this season, didn't seem to matter much as long as the nodes were kept moist. A lot of it is genetic I think. I never seen top vine roots like I did this year on the 498 vanhook, they were everywhere and they were big. My other plant hardly had any top vine rooting, mostly just one set off the bottom. I've trenched, and just covered them up, using plain patch soil, and for the area around the crown used a mix of patch soil and composted manure, I think almost any mix you want will work, the biggest thing IMO is keeping them moist. I had places I didn't bury where a root would form and dry out, or just a huge nub 1-2" straight up would form with no roots.
