I'm not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but very entertaining story about an inmate in a Rhode Island jail who grew a giant pumpkin. Apparently, playing Country & Western music is the key ingredient I've been missing:

You need really big headphones!

I keep seeing us in the "bizarre" or "odd news" section. I think we belong in the sports section.

Dan, that was grown off my 906 seed. A friend and former supervisor of mine took my seed to another facility with the blessing of the facilities command where some detainees took great care of the plant. They made many mistakes but they did a good job. The project was undertaken by a few people. After it was done the pumpkin was weighed at the big E and put outside the main enterance. The facilities managers liked the fact that it gave some people hope as well as gave them purpose. A full vegitable garden will be established next season. The projects purpose will be to rehabilitate as well as keep em busy. I've also heard other facilities on grounds are considering such programs. They plan on having a contest to see who can grow the heaviest. They say God works in strange ways....lol...yes he does

I think that was a great idea, and I agree that gardening would be rehabilitative for the inmates. I know gardening sure helps me to deal with stuff in my life. Good job Kenny!

I like it! It's a great idea. Sometimes wish I could be incarcerated so I could spend 100% of my time in the garden.

There's a British movie called "Green Thumb" starring Clive Owen and Helen Mirren about this exact thing. There is some great quotes in that movie

Ughhhhhhhhh Kenny, they used that ugly word..''guards''.

Other then that, its a great story lol. Our institution has grown them, and the ones that they did grow to a decent size where then donated to the first step and kindergarten schools in the area.

Kenny,
Thanks for the good deeds. I have some good friends who have been in and out of the joint. One of them is a great gardener who steered me in the direction of atlantic giants 10 years ago and I still use his tiller to this day. He is not a bad man, just made some bad choices. I was proud to have him in person and at this years weigh off. It sounds like a great way to rehabilitate those who get off the path and maybe change their lives in a positive direction and give them hope. Great work and great story.

PS...Mr. C. Warren...it ain't worth it!!! LOL
PS...Boz, & Shaz...many worse names than Guards, there are!!!
Wondering when the US system, will start to focus on rehab, and growing...rather than just "Lock em up"? Peace, Wayne
