Hi, it's time for fall amendments. What are some of the things do all of you put into your patches besides manure and limestone etc (based on soil tests)...

I usually have to bring ph down with sulfur.Watch for mg/ca ratio. We tend to be to low in manganese and boron. I use composted horse poo and leaves as my compost.

Calcium... we're chronically short on it. OM up the wazingo. This fall it will be cottonseed hulls deep, and maple leaves in the top foot. (along with compost) Other amendments still to be determined.

With adding stuff like fish blood and bone, would the nutrients wash away over the winter?
I have added manure and have a cover crop or grazing rye growing. Could I add the fish, blood and bone now so that the cover crop sucks it all up and keeps it until next year?
Or should I just apply in the spring?

Always start with a soil test before patch prep, makes life so much easier. I have added tons of leaves, horse/cow manure and generally speaking every year I have to add gypsum and sulfur to bring the PH down. Consistently the ph goes right back up to 7.6 every Fall.

Dandytown, save fish, blood and bone meal until the spring. Nitrogen will be leached out over the winter, unless you are growing in a greenhouse. Phosphorus in bone meal can be added in spring so pumpkins can grow a good root system.
Remember: soil test, soil test, soil test(fall, spring, mid-summer).

the decomposition of the leaves and manure will use nitrogen.

Here's a link that explains manure, nitrogen, and how fast it is used up: http://www.ecochem.com/t_manure_fert.html :-)
