If there is any doubt, a few pounds less is better than a DQ. I doubt the fans will affect the weight much.

I would not encourage fans. Air movement will only encourage transpiration/evaporation from the fruit. There are other ways to manage rot other than air movement.
If you've ever wrapped a pumpkin in shrink wrap, you'll note the incredible amount of moisture that builds up very quickly inside. These pumpkins breathe and if every ounce at the scale counts, then you need to consider containing the breathing.

Do what you have to save that pumpkin Vince. Likely a PB for you. Do you have daconil to paint on the bad spots? If not call me and I will get you some. Just make sure you get it wiped off before you weigh it.

Vince, Its not very pleasant but a method to get rid of the rot is to scrape it all away then scrape away a bit more (need to get to healthy tissue). Dry it the best you can (paper towel) lightly apply a fungicide (a quick spray from a Desenex or Tinactin or generic powder spray appeals to me the most) (sulfer powder is another option or a light dusting of Daconil)its important you keep anything applied thin so the tissue can breathe. I'd go with a fan at this point in your case. I hope it makes the scale for you. Good Luck. John
