Hi,

I think about growing carrots for weight next year but only found very few information or tips on the Internet and would be happy if you could give me some.

I have also one particular question: Giant Carrots I've seen on pictures often were more like a tangle of roots. Is this significant and are there any tricks to advance this?

Finally I'd like to know what seeds you would recommend. I read about "Flakkee 2"....
And are there seeds of certain heavy (weighed) carrots available somewhere?

Thank you!!

Yes, you can use Flakkee or Flakkese, both being Dutch winter carrots and readily available.

Some growers cut off the tip of the main root once they reach about 6 inches, which causes the root to produce a whole tangle of new roots. The WR and many other big ones were grown like that.

Thank you, that helps a lot!
So Flakkee and Flakkese are two different varieties?
Would you recommend using perlite?
And a last question, maybe misleadingly formulated first:
Can you get seeds of particular (maybe "winning") heavy specimens anywhere? Or isn't that "necessary" at all?

Thanks!

Another question ;)
How do these growers manage to cut the main root at 6 inches??
Thanks again :)

i have some flakkee seed that i save from my own carrots if you want some just send a bub to:

Clarence Phipps

reedpoint mt 59069

in order to get big ones you gotta start very early inside as early as christmas and they are easly transplanted and simple to grow. i started mine in jan. and the tops are about 3-4 inches wide. I always wonder how to get the roots to tangle thx Brad can't wait to try the next year!

Just found an interesting link about "manipulating" carrots and parsnips. http://egvga.webs.com/apps/forums/topics/show/4449026
Yes, thanks again Brad :D

@mid
Thank you for your generous offer. I live in Europe but if it's okay for you I'll send you a bubble.

I'd like to grow the carrots in buckets, how big should they be?

Thanks!
