I may be helping with measuring pumpkins at a GPC weighoff tomorrow. Is there any official GPC rules regarding this? I know the basics of the three-way measurements to get the OTT. I've pretty much only done it on my pumpkins though. When part of the pumpkin is hanging over the edge of the pallet, do you pull the tape down to where you estimate the pallet would extend? How exacting do you recommend being? Should a few each of circ., side-to-side, and end-to-end measurements be made, to ensure you are measuring the largest parts of the pumpkin?

doug there should be growers there that have done it before you can consult with for shapes that are open to interpretation . 80% of the fruit will be strait forward. youll need a helper for measuring and a third person for writing down the #'s

Thanks for the link Martin. I've been measuring my pumpkins the same way. Thanks cojoe. I guess we'll just do the best we can on the measurements. I've been a little obsessive when measuring my own pumpkins at the end of the season. I measure them in at least a few places on each measurement, trying to find the largest measurements each way, while following the correct protocol.

A clipboard works well when part of the pumpkin hangs over the pallet.

If LARGE (Slungers) are involved, it truly takes 4 folks to do the job properly!!!! 3 to keep a tape "seriously" around the phat part, 3 to make sure ee is proper, and 3 to make sure it's correct that ss is around the tallest part of the pkn...and the 4th person to be collecting awl the data!!! Also, hoping that you have lot's of pkns hanging over the sides!!! Peace, Wayne
