I have been fighting stem rot for over 6 weeks and cannot stop it on the 1059. I have removed over half the stem now, fan 24/7, Captan, alcohol, hydro perox etc....
I am not growing for weight anymore this year, so I'd like to have it be a nice porch display. My question is if I cut it off the vine this weekend, will the rot stop since there won't be juices flowing and will it just dry up or does the rot continue, so I should keep it on the vine as long as possible?
Thanks in advance

I have a similar problem smallmouth, I hope we get some good replies to your post! The weigh-off for mine is Oct.1 and I would love to get my first pumpkin to the scale.

Hi Luke,- I've been fighting stem rot a lot this year, and on both fruit that still looked sound (except for the stem) I ended up carving all remains of the stem out with a spoon, and on the worst one where it went into the meat of the pumpkin, I've kept a fan running on it 24/7 and spray it once or twice a day with straight bleach. So--I think it was a good thing to remove all of the stem----as long as there was anything of the stem still attached, it just kept bleeding! It's dried up nicely now.

Yeah, I cut all the way to clean tissue, treat it, dry it and within a few days is is mushy and runny again. I'd like to salvage as much of the stem as possible since I am down to about 50% of the orginal. From an aesthetics standpoint, I guess I could tape a beer can to it once it's on my porch to replace the stem.
