I was just thinking!! I spend about $125 in fertilizer and additives a year on a pumpkin that takes up 600 square feet. If a cash cropper where to use our methods to grow an acre of corn, it would cost them about $7200 per acre. We are pretty extreme!!! Unless they harvested a 1000 bushel an acre crop they would be broke in one year!!!

The wife asked me once how much I spend on the pumpkins. Playing dumb, which is easy, I said "what do you mean?". She said "do you spend $150?" I said "do you mean total or per plant?" She just shook her head and walked away. Oops.

20 plus hours a week in the patch in the hottest summer ever in chicago area = 20 pounds less weight. Lol. And believe it or not, even in this screwy year, it brings a peace of mind that is hard to find anywhere else on this planet except in the patch. Come home from a bad days work and step into the patch..........those thoughts just seem to vanish into thin air. Can't really put a price on that. Perspective.

My wife gets the credit card bills and swears it is thousands of dollars. I bought her a pumpkin widow t-shirt and she wore it to bridge club last night. She likes the pumpkins and helps but doesn't like it when I won't leave at pollination time.

Grizfan, where did you get the pumpkin widow t-shirt? I have to get my wife one of those. She tells me all the time that she has a "love/hate" relationship with the pumpkins. From my perspective it seems more of a hate relationship.

There is no better reward than working hard and getting the reward of being amazed at what these plants will do. I love when kids and adults both are surprised. This website has saved me hundereds of dollars in money that I may have foolishly spend. If you want to find out a cheap way to do it, someone here knows how. Helps you spend your money on what is important. It is so much fun doing this.

I agree- This is actually a cheap hobby and I do find it very relaxing. There are many people that golf witha $800 a year membership. In fact I couldn't find any thing cheaper to do unless you sit in front of the tv doing nothing. I also have regular visitors who are more than amazed at the whole thing. That's pretty cool!!!!
