Im building a tri pod to lift my pumpkin, Id like to use 4x4's but they only come in 8 12 14 ft height, Was just wondering how big your tri pods are what did you use to join 4x4's togethor to get proper height and how high can you lift your kin with your current set up
thanks

http://www.team-pumpkin.org/ look one left side of the page for the tripod link. There are full instructions on how I did mine. Also if you look in the photos section there are some pictures showing the detail of the connection at the top. 14 footers will probably work even though I used 16

I use 16 ft 4x4's, the 14 ft might work but you have to get the pumpkin high enough and have enough room to back the truck under.. To connect the top, I drilled a hole threw the 3 4x4's and used a piece of 3/4 inch threaded rod, (1/2 worked but bent) then a peice of chain hanging down to attach the hoist and put nuts and washers. I also trimmed the top of the 4x4's on an angle so they would meet correctly. Bob

I use 10' 4x4's and they have always worked just fine. They provided enough width and heighth to load into a full size pickup.

The taller they are, the closer the legs are to vertical. The closer to vertical the higher the load capacity. The load capacity decreases dramatically as you get further from 90 degrees (stretch legs out) 16 is the perfect height for any size kin. If lifting 500 pounders like you typically do Dave, I don't think you have to worry about strength. Lol.

I run 14' couldn't lift 16' into position without the ends digging out of the ground.

Chris has them exploding also?
I thought I was the only one.....you can always come across the border and get my 16's, I won't be needing them this year.
