The Garden State

Good night Irene!!
I am sitting here in South Jersey praying that this storm tracks more to the east. All I can envision is a tattered plant and a split pumpkin.

It looks like its heading straight for Long Island. If it does, the eye of the storm should pass directly over my last remaining pumpkin. Last week we had the earthquake, and now this. Perfect excuses for my "not so big" pumpkin.
I am not even sure if its still growing. Its very hard to tell, but I might be getting a pound or two per day. Maybe this storm will give it the smack that it needs.

That hurricane is nothing to laugh at. If it follows its predicted track it will be one of the worst hurricanes in a while for the Northeast. Hopefully it will weaken.

WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR

So. Maine

We had Hurricane BOB August 19th 1991 our second year of growing giants and received over 9 inches of rain . At the time we had 4 pumpkins est. 500 pounds or more each , in 2 weeks 2 of the 4 were going soft and that left us with 2 remaining so we took the bigger of the 2 to a contest at a Fair in Maine and weighed in at 675 pounds . We took the other to Topsfield , Mass and weighed in at 527 . The reason we took the bigger of the 2 to the Maine contest is because it was 3 weeks before Topsfield's weigh- in and I was concerned it would not last until then . Well good thing I did because when we went back to pick up the 675 at the Fair it had a soft spot on the side and was starting to drip .

I would like to hear what Pap had for luck after Hurricane Bob went through , I remember he and Ron were growing in 1991 Pap ???

hey everyone, dont forget , there is a grower in eastern north carolina.the storm is drawing a bullseye on my county just miles after it makes landfall. while we are old pros at taking on hurricanes, this is a very large and dangerous storm with lots of rain and tidal surges to go with the high winds , and theres always a chance of tornadoes imbedded in the storm.so , i will try and make regular posts on bp up until power goes out as is usually the case with a hurricane here.good luck to those who will be affected by irene, and think about your fellow grower in the south .

Good luck Gary. I hope you and your family stay safe.

Thanks for the luck Wayne. It sure looks like I am going to need it.

If we lose power here the website will have to be brought down until it comes back on.

Prayers and gook luck to all in the east. At least you have time to get boarded up and gas in the cars and trucks. We just have to worry about earthquakes in CA.
