A friend of mine has had every male flower open up with no inners, no pollen, no junk! has any one ever had this happen?

The Sandpile

This has been a relatively common observation in a number of 1161 progeny this year.

This plant is the 817 Northrup plant, first time I have seen this. But I did notice a lot of deformities this year on other plants that I am growing.

Let me guess the 1197 Matessa? (1161 Selfed)
Same thing happened to me. Chances are slim to none that a female on that plant will take. My oldest started to shrivel at 11 days.
Plant is sterile.

It seems like your 1197 is a relatively isolated incident Chris. I know of 3 1197's that have nice pumpkins going on them that are well over day 30...infact, I know of one that is pushing well over 800lbs already. That being said, It appears that sterility has been seen in several 1161 progeny this year.

No problems here on my 1197, (except me) this has been a really strong plant, I'd grow it again

Sorry to hijack this thread Ben. Ben being a GVGO member, I immediately thought the seed in question was a 1197. It appears ben posted while I was typing.
All that being said, no disrespect was meant to you John. Crap happens in nature and yes there has been an unusually high number of 1161 progeny with this problem. There is no doubt in my mind that many 1197's will throw monsters. I also suspect that if enough were grown they would prove to have a disproportionate number of problem plants.
For me, there are just too many good seeds out there to take a chance on this seed again or for that matter any other seed we are seeing this year with similar problems.

Cheers.

My 1610 Leiber is that way. It aborted the earlier sets but it has one going now thats up around 300 lbs, hopefully it doesn't abort. In most cases when that happens all the fruits abort, but every once in a while they will grow fruit.
