Hi!

I have started to grow pumpkins in my backyard in northern Sweden (Umeå). The climate is'nt favourable, but I'm having a great time competing with my father, who lives even further up north, in who ca grow the biggest pumpkin.

Now to my question. I have four plants of Atlantic Giant (seeds bought from the company Impecta) and the pumpkins seems very different on one of them. Instead of being round they are sort of oval. I have pollinated them all by hand and all four fruits on that vine looks the same. On the other vines, and especially the one that I am trying to grow as big as possible, are very round and nice.

What could be the cause of this?

Thanks in advance!

/Daniel

Thats perfectly normal to see variation in shape. Most of the conventional wisdom says that the longer oval shape pumpkins are actually better because they have more potential to pack on the pounds late in the season.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm am saving one of each, one oval and one round. Hopefylly next year I'll get an earlier start on the season, and bigger pumpkins in the autumn.

Hey Daniel, here are all the pumpkins I grew last year. Check out the 3 in the back all grown on one plant. None of them were round shaped.
