I've seen a 150+lb pumpkin grown from a flower bucket/pot that might have been 8 gallons.

I've seen a 400 pounder grown in a whisky barrel. Plant was probably 150 square feet. Roots were popping out of the barrel into the ground however.

I used a five gallon bucket twice. Both times I lost the pumpkins. So try at least a 10 gallon bucket.

I am growing on 120 SF right now. I am only at about 140 pounds right now though. Probably won't get much over 200.

I grew a 40 pounder in a 5 gallon flower pot on a apartment balcony. Watered 2 times a day every day plus miracle grow and Neptune's harvest. Saucer full of water under the pot. Another pot the same size I grew a 14 ft sunflower. It was the top balcony.
