Subject: field pumpkin storage/ weight loss

Will a field pumpkin lose much weight if it is picked now and put in a cool dry place and placed on a board until Oct ?

as soon as you cut a pumpkin from the vine it will start to lose water weight. eventually all pumpkins will rot, too. field pumpkins are not great keepers. butternut and hubbard are the best storage squash and can keep 6-8 months or more. standard pumpkins and most squash are lucky to keep 3 months. some hard shelled squash like acorn and spagetti squash are somewhere in between. so the answer is...it might make it that long but it will be lighter than the day you picked it.

Leave it on the vine...shade it and keep it off the ground. Wipe weekly with a fungicide.
