If they get close to the pumpkin and deep, sometimes inserting a knifetip and cutting longways along stem, away from fruit will help ease the pressure.I did this again recently and got lucky. The stem opened more but not toward pumpkin. No loss of water to fruit as the cut is longways.

Apparantly so. There are a few post's in the new growers forum and most of which say that the splits are often superficial and will heal. But not all I guess.
I have a stem split.

I put a small cut in today as I fear it may travel to the pumpkin. The problem now is that the new cut is seeping water into the split that I want to keep dry. Just posted a picture today and waiting for it to upload. Check my diary for todays entry later.

Do you have a picture of yours?

Dandytown....that link to the split on yours is superficial and common.

They will more often than not scar over and be tough as nails.
