I have a ton of roots shooting up to the surface. This pic was taken after I moved my walk board. but I find these all over 2 to 3 feet away from the plant. what happens if I don't cover these . http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=165428

Totally normal. These plants send out a massive root system, which is why they can get so big.
