Maybe this should be in the newbie section for such a lame mistake....it was cool and wet and when I picked up the main vine to free it from stress, SNAP! went the stem on my first pollinated pumpkin just starting to show growth. I was wondering if anyone else has kept going with a snapped pumpkin stem. Its not broken all the way thru....just maybe halfway and I placed it so that the break fits back together. It is leaking however....

Ive never had to deal with that. The old addage still remains. An ounce of prevention is better then a pound of cure. Id try and see what happens. Then again im not sure how bad it is. Sorry buddy.

I believe you have to take everything into consideration ! Age of plant ? is there a pumpkin showing farther out on main vine? OK that said I am growing one now & it is doing good so far ,.It cracked maybe 1/3 & then length wise also < ,Problem is i needed to take this one as i may get disease later in that patch ! Every circumstance is different ! this one could easily get me a new personal best & win at local weigh-off ? BUT i will never know its true potential now?? It is getting late in yr! BUT did you start late ? it would be ok ?? If you started may 15-30 you would still be ok to take another pumpkin ? Many variables to concider ?

Treat break with Daconil/Captan. Use a roll of gauze to wrap tongue depressors to keep break together. Make a tent to keep moisture off break and put fan under tent to keep the break dry.

I was stupid last year, too. But this procedure still produced a great looking orange pumpkin weighing almost 500 lb.

Of course, there are no guarantees in this game, and your results may vary.

I see vines that are almost torn all the way through that still finction normal, so I don't see why not a stem. If it is your only option on that plant, try what Steve said. You'll prob just lose some size potential.

If you cut/break your stem it is not the end,,trust me,,growers,,even me,,have cut chunks off the stem after a split in order to relieve stress,,and guess what the fruit still grows,,you will lose potential, but that would be expected,

But because your fruit was a young set,,it may abort, time will tell.

It is still leaking a little and I will add captan, but I am encouraged by a decent increase in size overnite. It was very small (baseball sized) when this happened so if the gains are there, all may be well (time will tell). Thanks for the replies and encouragment.
