I read with great sympathy Chris Stevens' latest diary entry and his battles with various AG afflictions.
After a VERY dismal beginning to the season due to the record rainfall this past spring, we DID manage to get the prep work done between the rains in a timely fashion. After riding a very heady high the past three weeks relevant to a couple of pumpkins we have going, we got hit last night with a storm of epic proportion. I entered the patch this morning to what looked like armageddon: three out of five huts cracked up, foliage down everywhere, and a foamer on the 1495 Stelts. It is what it is.

I can relate, we got hit with the worst storm we've had here in a few years last night. when you look at radar it goes from light green that means sprinkles to dark pink that means "tie the cows down" well a dark pink cell rested over my area for 20 minutes...very enjoyable if your a fern, not so if your a pumpkin grower. All I'm doing now is keeping an eye on mains & stems looking for splits. After that when everything is done raising back up I'll go in and remove what didn't recover. Things like this would make you give up IF I wasn't so damned hooked on growing these things. I was depressed all night but by morning I was plotting my strategy on how to bounce back. Never give up, never surrender.

Though I had it bad with a smaller plant and lower gains then I wanted, But at least it hasn't split or foamed. Lost a lot of leaves last week though.

Bill,
The pumpkins themselves survived without damage. The focus from here on out will be to keep as much of the plant viable for as long as possible. We have very good root establishment thanks to Joel's Bio-Grow Endo Plus and kelp meal in the trenches. Those roots will be the difference come September.

The winds last night were from the best direction for my patch but i know how strong they were and feel all of you that took it hard. Hang in there like I told Paul it always looks better in the next few days after the storm.
I wonder if there is ever a year that goes by with out something going wrong for us in the patch.

Sorry about you guys getting whacked like that. It sucks to see some of you going through this. I feel guilty when I hear of your losses. Early in the season after taking down the greenhpuses we got slammed with 35 mile an hour winds. I lost 40 percent of my leaves. Even with silt fenceing and parking car around the patch. We tried everything to include bamboo to every leaf. To no avail the wind almost crushhed my season. The plants bounced back but not that well. I understand the frutration good luck.
