Hello All,
Right now I have two giant pumpkin plants. They both have mains that are about 20 ft long and are growing voraciously(one was a ribbon vine, secondary has become a new main). I am happy with the explosive grow, however, I have a few concerns.
One, is the ends of vines that are far from the base. It seems that as the vine has grown, new, developing leaves are grossly misshapen. I even have some that are yellow, and will not green up.
See pics http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=164744 http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=164746 http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=164747

I have lost 5 fruits (4 aborted, 1 rotted), that were anywhere from 3-15 days old. I have 4 left that 2-3 days. I know that it is very late, but I am hoping now that I can at least get some fruit.
Any ideas as to what is happening here. I have been fertilizing once every 7-10 days, with 20-20-20 miracle grow and 5-1-1 fish emulsion. I have some bloom booster, seaweed, and another good source of K, but have not applies yet. Also, I have applied calcarb twice, and used some sevin powder early in the season for insects.
Thanks in advance,
-Trey

That looks like 2-4-d.... Have you sprayed a broad-leaf killer around the patch or on a nearby lawn?
I would bet most of my money on it...
Unfortunately the prognosis is not good. The plant will not recover.
Hope I am wrong...but doubt it

Looks like you are burying with a compost. That could be the source as well.

If you look at the new section under plant problems, written by Matt D, it looks like a virus.Caused by aphids, No cure. Your last entry looks exactly like one of Matts pictures, the one with the postules.

Wow, thanks for all the replies. I have been burying with a 1/2 compost 1/2 top soil mix. I treated burdock around the property with 2-4-d on a still, dry day. I was at a reasonable distance away, but I guess it's possible a rogue breeze could have carried some just about anywhere. Lastly, I have not noticed any aphids, but will do a more thorough search.
Any chance for getting a fruit on the section of the plant that is still in good condition? or a secondary or even tertiary vine?

Two of my four remaining fruits have aborted, and two have doubled in size from yesterday. I'm crossing my fingers. I have acorn squash, summer squash, cukes, and sunflowers in close proximity to my pumpkins. There are also some deformations on the acorn sqaush vines, but not to the same degree as the kins, however, they are holding their fruits. Everything else is growing beautifully. Haven't checked for aphids yet.

With the heat and humidity we have had your 2-4-D volitalized and carried most likely. I get nervous anytime I see someone spraying... They are more nervous when I ask them what active chemical they are spraying...Most do not know.
