I have a decent fruit growing on the main vine of my 1167 Courson, the only issue is that it is growing at an acute angle to the main. I want to cut the main next to the fruit to avoid this issue, but am worried about the pumpkin aborting ( 13 days old )from a cut that close to the pumpkin. Will I be okay doing this? Any advice on fungicide etc I can use to avoid the fruit going down?

I'm assuming you mean cut the main AFTER the pumpkin. There's no reason why you can't uproot at least a portion of the main right after the pumpkin and move it out of harm's way.

Definently talking about cutting after the pumpkin. I would rather keep the vine in tact, but I just don't see a way that I can. Secondaries are about 8 ft near the fruit and within a couple of days the pumpkin will have grown over the main. Very poor positioning, I was hoping to cut the vine near enough to the stem so that I no longer have to worry about the strain of the main being pinned underneath the fruit. After a little searching all I found was that using captan after making the cut would help alleviate any problems from occuring.

i had similar problem and ended up pulling up a few roots and was real careful not to break main. just move it were it should be a little at a time. some secondarys i uprooted were 12ft. you can pull a vine without breaking as long as you have them up rooted and loose. just dont bend them too much. if its too acute of angle you could do a 90 with main but youd lose a lot of plant. id just move the vine were it should be then move the pumpkin more perpendicular to main over a few days.

Dhertz,

Many people terminate the main at the pumpkin and grow the last 4 or so secondaries before the fruit long, training them around and past the fruit. As long as you have growing tips on the secondaries, and you don't think you can get the main at the fruit out of the way and want to grow this fruit, waiting will not make anything better.

Thank you all for your help, I cut it in stages a couple days ago and applied captan at the ends after each cut. So far so good.
