I cut a female flower off yesterday that was on the end of a secondary- in a very dark area- right next to the fence - under a thick canopy of leaves. The stem on it was 5-6 inches long as it had reached up for light and space. All the other female stems on that plant at that stage are (have been) 1-2 inches long. So that got me thinking could we create a longer stem on a female if we covered them completely and forced them to grow up for light?
Has any body thought about this or tried this?
It's a little late this year for most (or not?) but it might be something to keep in mind and try for next year.

What you need is an Acme pumpkin stem stretcher.
