Was wanting to ask a question to the guys who have sent tissue samples in about a particular leaf you use when sending in for a tissue sample. Do you send in the newer leaves towards the main vine tips , or take a older leaf that is near the stump that is near the main vine?
I been having (nutrient) problems with my plants that starting about 3 weeks ago and I was wondering if the location of the plant sample I use would make a difference?
Would I try to use a leaf sample that was starting to grow at the time I notice my nutrient deficiency at 3 weeks ago, or would this make a difference or not?

Brooks, the best advise is to contact the place where you are going to send your sample, explain your situation and they will tell you which leaf to send.

Brooks check with these guys, CLC labs out of westerville OH. I know some growers use them. I'm planning to as well. http://www.onla.org/index.cfm/fuseaction/home.showpage/pageID/307/index.htm

Western Labs is expensive compared to other labs, but they are FAST!!!
Check them out, if it's an ASAP situation.

Brooks here is a quote from an Expert Heavy Hitter that I asked the same question. "Pete, Take the leaf and petiole from several of your plants. I send about 4-6 leaves, if all my plants are looking and "acting" the same. I take recently mature leaves. ( near the tip of the main vine, about 3-4 ft back. ) Rinse them with cool water, let them air dry and send them to western labs. Test I use is $45.00 DO not send in a zip lock bag. send in brown bag." This is what I did and had results fast.

5th leaf back is the instructions they had on their site when I sent one in last year. I took the 5th leaf back from the tip on 3 or 4 side vines. You want about 2 cups worth of sample.

I sent in a leaf sample last year and they asked for the first fully developed leaf on the main vine. Basicly what Sweet1 and NSB said.

Hey Brooks,.........when I send in a sample for tissue testing all the want is the leaf stem. When you cut the leaf off just cut off the leaf part and leave about an inch of leaf left. Plus make sure it is a mature leaf or leaves depending how many tests you are doing. Ask the lab how many stems per plant per test they need. Plus they tend to go mushy very fast. Tip...soak some paper towels, ring out till just very damp. Them roll each stem up in some of the towels. Flip over the ends and just use tape going around and around the ends to hold it together, tape on tape ring. Ship them the fastest way that they can get to the lab. Also due your leaf cutting the morning you are going to the post office. Cuts down on the time that they can go mush on you while in transit. This is the what Western Laboratories tells me to do.
Have a good one guy.

I remember learning that when there is a nutrient deficiency the plant sacrifices the oldest leaves to transport the nutrient to the new growth.

Brooks, sorry you cant get a hold of your people. Send in newly matured leaf off main if you can. I sent in 5 leaves total from two plants. Dry them for a day before you send. You need enough say to make the size of a baseball, almost softball when all squished together.

Say it aint so Brooks! Your query about the 998.5 Liggett late last year convinced me to grow it. I hope you are. It's a dandy.

Hi Joe!, the 998 is my biggest pumpkin in the patch, best 10 day and 20 day measurements I have ever had , unfortunately I don't think its going to last because of the lack of secondaries I have on that plant.
all that rain we had early on really did a number on depleted the nitrogen in my patch during pollination time. Now Im trying to grow secondaries vines along with fast growing pumpkins which doesn't work out to well, once the pumpkin kicks into gear the secondaries slow way down to a crawl now at this point, so I think it might be a little to late having the right amount of nitrogen in my soil now and trying to get secondaries to grow to help feed the pumpkin, but time will tell I guess.
