How big are the side vines and how many leaves do you have? If you have a lot of plant behind that pumpkin at 8' you should be fine. Former world record 1725 Harp was grown at 9'.

I grew a flag pattern last year and set one at 7 ft out. Once the pumpkin got bigger (around 300-400 pounds), the vine growth (mostly side vines) stalled out big time.
But, this plant was only getting watered by a hose, so it was not getting the best attention.
Once the fruit was mature, the vine growth picked back up.
I am growing two flag patterns this year and am letting them get longer before I pick the chosen one.I think having more plant behind the fruit is an advantage, especially with a flag pattern.
