milford, CT,

Main is preferred..many times ones on the secondaries grow fast but then slow quickly. If your goal is 1000 lbs I think either has the potential..If you are looking for competitive at weigh off fruit..the main is the way..Mark

I agree the main is the best. Although if you have no choice but to grow on a side vine then you gotta do what you gotta do. You can still grow a nice fruit with the use of the side vine. I grew on over 700 lbs on a side vine due to critter damage.

which secondary are you talking about? One close to the stump or far down the main?

I had/have to pollinate a few on the sides this year due to main tip burns 2 weeks ago and this morning I found my secondary main tip got chewed off 10" from the tip.

But if you a choice.....main.

Because the vast majority of kins are grown on the main, it is hard to tell what difference if any if they are grown on a side.

Last year was my first year. 1030 grown on secondary main, 990 grown on secondary, 920 on main and 884 on main.

I know that 4 pumpkins is not the best test group but it's made me a believer that a side vine is not the end of the world and as Doc BOb has proven, a monster can be grown anywhere on the plant.
