vine about a foot in front of first pumpkin (about 11 ft from stump). I hope it will heal up but I am preparing for the worst,so I started training a secondary around to be the "new" main. Do the tirts now become secondaries ? what do I do with the old main and old secondaries? if I need to go with the New main

First. Is the main free from roots 3 -4 feet back so it can move as the pumpkin grows? Clean the split with a mild solution of hydrogen peroxide &water and seal with wax or paraffin and wrap it in duck tape. It will probably survive.

I agree with Don, you need to start the healing process right away. which means drying it as soon as possible.
