okay i want to hear grower thoughts on how a kins grows, i believe it sucks juice so the most available is best to grow the biggest proof being the farthest vines from kin get biggest.the closer you get the smaller, so my opinion is back vines mean little but close one mean alot, lets here some opinions but listen to the good ones

Maybe we should pollinate pumpkin on first sidevine rather than main. I did cut one off this weekend that was a lot bigger female than the one on the main. So you think that a close set to the stump might be better than 25 feet away.

Leaves are smaller closer to the fruit because the are younger than the leaves close to the stump so they have had less time to grow. More importantly the fruit is a sink and once the flow of energy starts flowing to the fruit then everything else is robbed of that energy. I do believe the vines after the fruit feed the fruit. There was been more than one grower who lost the main right up to the fruit but the back vines kept the fruit growing. Pap talks about putting on 400 pounds on one of his pumpkins with only back vines.
pumpkins on the side vines tend to grow faster initially on the side vines but that growth tapers off quickly as the season goes on.

I think everything feeds into it.

I have never been able to grow a pumpkin on the main vine because I snapped it off while being to rammy to pin it down.(you'd think i'd learn) Thing is the pumpkins I have been growing have all been side viners close to the stump. Last year was 5- 6 feet from the stump. Pollinated June 25 and stopped growing Aug. 10. I did get a 700 pounder out of this short period of time!! My side vine pumpkins have always been short growth periods in my experiance, I think mainly because you are trying to work with the part of the plant that is naturally dieing off the earliest. ps This year will be my first main viner I hope!!!!

I believe the pumpkin is a big drain. The energy needs tp get to the fruit. Some fruits have a better ability to take more energy in as well as have a better shape and no genetic flaws. as far as having the pumpkin further down the vine, Ive had the best luck with fruit that are 10 to 12 feet from the stump. But my main belief if that the pumpkin gets energy from the entire plant, 10 feet 15 feet, its all the same so long as you have a healthy plant that can push a fruit . I do believe that the main vine has the best chances of growing the bigger pumpkin just because of the flow of nutrient to the fruit.

I think the farther the pumpkin the more leaves it has to create carbs. Carbs are what it uses for energy. After the fruit, my vines slow way down, I think because the pumpkin is taking all of the energy. Because when my pumpkin slowed way down last year my vine picked back up, but I do believe that whole plant is feeding the pumpkin to a point, it has to use some energy to keep the leaves alive too. So stands to reason, get enough vine to get that huge growth for as long as you can before leaves start dying.

I believe the whole plant feeds the fruit. When the plant is still filling in the plot then the new growth and fruit growth prob. compete with each other. The vine tips supply (hormonal)signals back to the plant-thats why some growers never terminate the main.
