Won't it just attract the moth to the area you don't want them, the pumpkin patch. Do you put it away from the patch?

Good question. I have mine at the tip of the patch where there is no plant. But there's also logic in putting it by the plant as the moth will be attracted to the plant as well too.

fermone atracts them and I must say rather good too, but I would put a good distance from patch (i.e., attract them away from patch vice to it!)!

At the far end of your patch grow a summer squash . Put the trap near the summer squash , the prefered target of SVB.

I've put mine in between two plants growing back to back at leaf height for two years, if the insect is coming for my plant, I want him to see the trap loud and clear.

Exactly what Tom says Put it next to your plant it will take them away from plant not to it.That lure is only good for a few dozen feet it wont bring more to patch then you already have!

Try to think "up wind" from the patch if possible. You want the scent to flow over the patch where the SVB may be and then attract them back to the trap. The wind "generally" comes from the west here so my trap is on the west side sitting over some summer squash plants. But my patch is also long and narrow so this works for me. If you put it on the downwind side don't blame the trap, or Tom P, if you don't catch any and still have problems.

Another NH grower knows that a trap belongs over summer squash according to the NH Cooperative Extension.

Sounds like Bill and Bruce may be serving summer squash sprinkled with SVBs at the NHGPG Patch Tour, at Bruce Hooker's on 7/12 in Belmont NH.

I have one in my pumpkin patch, several feet from the plant, along with a cucumber beetle trap. I have another one next to my zucchini plants (20' away). The one by the zucchini is catching the most, by a large margin. I have both SVB traps sitting on the ground.

That is because summer and zucchini are the prefered " food " of the SVB .
