We all know that the main pumpkin that stands out is the 1725 that was grown at 9.5 ft out on main ! But what other bigger sized ones were close in? Anything else huge grown say 12 ft out or less ? Just kind wondered especially since i will probably be going with one at 10 ft & another one at 11 ft out !!

The 1548 Marsh was at 11 ft. The 1544.4 Mcmullen was at 11 ft. The 1536.5 Van Kooten was at 12 ft. The 1536 Sweet was at 12 ft. The 1524.5 Liggett was at 10 ft. The 1521.5 Werner was at 12 ft.

I wonder if a lot of those measurements are estimates. I have never seen anyone actually measure the distance from stump to pumpkin.

I measure mine....I would think for statistical purposes one would want the data to be acurate. In our quest for a bigger pumpkin statistical analysis of many might reveal commonalities to take us to the next level.

Since the distance is relatively close to the stump. Do you think all those are the 1st pollination...If so ,then the 1st female showing should get all the attention..that is a pretty impressive group..

This is the best statistical data that I am aware of in regards to distance from stump to fruit. A fair amount of work was put into this I'm sure. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/MsgBoard/ViewThread.asp?b=3&p=302127

Glad to know I'm not the only obsessive compulsive out there....was out in the patch the other day and wife and I had the tape out measuring the kins exact distance from stump.

Would it make any difference to the figures if the vines were trained differently? Say, christmas tree as opposed to flag pole. The amount of leaves behind the pumpkin could be different for different training methods.

This is good, but perhaps a better number to think about would be the number of secondaries and leaves that are "behind" the fruit? Or, if length really matters, then we'd need to think that rooting along the main vine plays a major role.
In my case my personal best was also the furthest out. I always struggle to get any length on my vines. Right now most of mine are at 7 to 8 feet, so to get beyond 11 I'd need to wait until mid-July.

Im in the construction buisness .A dollar bill is 6 inchs,My step is 3 feet.My drip tape is spaced 2 feet! I dont need a tape measure,I can tell you how long your living room is within 6 inchs without a tape measure! If you cant do that, I would get out a tape measure to be sure,LOL

It's fairly simple, once the plant starts to vine & hits the ground stretch a tape 10' out & put a dowel rod. Again at 12',14' ect. Once the pumpkin you want is set it's pretty simple to see how far out it is.
