So we are at our cross roadZ of pollination for the weigh offZ....IZ it more important to pollinate NOW, even if the plant is smaller....or doeZ one wait for another 7 dayZ of growth on vineZ....then pollinate and make up the diff with more leaveZ...that iZ the question....
Please AdviZe.

I agree with John, Pollinate them all, choose later, but I like more leavZ, i culled 2 that were almost volleyball size pollinated on the 15th. But they waZ only out 6 and 8 ft, not much behind them. But look at the Harp, @ 9ft. SO who knowZ!!!

Heres how I look at it Wiz. Please note I am still learning the ropes but I think that I have a good plan when it comes to plant size and distance. I always try to set a pumpkin 11-17' out with as many side vines dead headed as possible. For example, my 1325 Hopkins plant is growing in a 630 square foot area which is a medium size plant. On each side of the plant I have 5-6 side vines deadheaded already. Although my first 3 females on this plant have been deformed or there was no pollen availble I have a pollination tomorrow morning and I belive this will be "the one" @ 14.5' which is in the zone I like. But if/when this pumpkin sets the plant size and distance is perfect so this pumpkin will take off. So for me I think its 50/50 and both have a major role in the pumpkin. Not trying to give a sermon or anything, just trying to show you the way I look at it. Best of luck with the 1810 and grow'm big!

Pollinate now! ! They don't really put on any weight until somewhere between 15 and 20 days. That means your plant will be twice as big when it needs to be. Sorry Eddy lol.

Ideally I was told that you don't want to start terminating vines before the pollinated pumpkins are 30 days old....so Martin...your method is new to me.
Wiz...you know the age old debate over salad before the fruit and salad after the fruit...so just get pumpkins pollinated and you can decide where the rest of your salad needs to be....before or after the fruit!!

How much weight did your average early pollinated pumpkin grow the last week before the weighoff? If it was just a few pounds, I would bet that a pollination one week later with a larger plant would easilily offset those few pounds that you get at the end of the season.
