I know there is an ideal pollination zone like early July for like 10 days?? What if my main vine is only 4 ft. Do I still have a good chance to hit that zone? or is it ok to wait until later in July to Pollinate and still get a good heavy pumpkin? So many questions sorry.

Depending on where you are located the time most growers pollinate is between June 25th to July 4th. There have been some monster pumpkins grown that were pollinated after the 4th however. Typically you want the main vine 10-14 feet from the stump where you pollinate. The reason for this is that the root system and number of leaves will be in place to power the growth of the pumpkin. I would wait until you your main is at least 8 feet from the stump and then choose one of the pumpkins that grows on the main vine after that. Your plant should be growing pretty quickly right now so that 4 foot long main will be out there faster than you know it.

This year was wet and many people are late with their pollinations. In Southern New England the wind messed us up really good. Thank god that things seem to be somewhat stable. you should have 8 ft on your main by the 4th of July. Have you been uing any fertilizers? I pollinated pumpkins on side vines last year in mid july and still managed to grow one that was a monster. Good luck and keep the questions going that how we all learn.
