The MAGPG is happy to announce the world’s first SmartPhone app for giant pumpkins. We are unleashing the app in a series of 3 builds with its principal use being an OTT tool. Please visit www.pumpkns.com for screenshots. This app is not to be confused with Ken’s pending tool for bigpumpkins.com, which will hopefully also be available soon! Build #1: The core of the app, the OTT calculator. The app will receive SS-EE-CC measurements from the user and output total inches. The app then computes and outputs the estimated weight from the OTT chart, the circumference chart, and a “hybrid” weight which is the average of both values. The OTT estimates are derived from the 2008 weight chart available on the GPC website. Target release date for this build: July 07 2011. Just in time to start your day 20’s. Build #2: the user will be able to load each of their pumpkins into a personal database and then daily measurements will be saved and tracked, allowing comparisons to be made against each other (for single user). The user can easily compare growth rates of multiple candidate pumpkins on the same plant, and as the season progresses they will be able to make comparisons between the different plants in their patch. Target release date: TBD. We need to assess the initial interest in the software before rushing into the additional man hours required.

Build #3: the user will be able to upload their data across a network of other users allowing for comparisons against peers and benchmark pumpkins. We believe this will be a tremendous breakthrough for pumpkin analysis. In addition to charting your growth curve against the Ailts/ Landry benchmarks, we were very fortunate to receive the raw data from Joe. So if for instance you want to compare your pumpkin on the fly to say the 1674 Connolly, or the 1658 Young.. or the 1810.5 Stevens you will be able to do that. Target release date for this build: Pollination time 2012. Build #1 has been submitted to Apple for final approval. Sorry Droid users, the first compiling is for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users only. We will get to your devices too but we need to hear from you. Please post your comments here, or at [email protected] Recompiling for the Droid code will take a considerable amount of work so let us know it is worth it!

It will be made available to Droid users after a separate compiling. The date for the Driod App, I believe, is TBD.

Per the designer:
Android & Droid Releases to follow, however, the Apple iOS version will probably be the first to see another round of updates (persistent data storage/tracking/reporting, etc), the other releases will follow this pattern -- unless the demand shifts to another platform.
Export, this and several other features are inline for the next release. The "goal" was to get it approved through the Apple iTunes distribution with the basic calculator -- once approved there is a 1-2 day turn around on subsequent releases.
