Hello All,

I am new to the forum, and have been growing giant pumpkins this year. So far, I have 2 main plants, and a couple decoys in a secondary patch. The two main plants have been slowly yellowing near the base.

I have had to problems with pests, but there are two things that I can come up with, over watering and not enough nitrogen.

We have been getting a lot of rain in SE WI, so I haven't been watering, and I applied some fertilizers. The yellowing has seemed to decline quite a bit.

Is there anything else that may be causing this?

Thanks,

-Trey

As long as you don't have any probs with dramatic amounts of leaf wilt then its probably all the wet and cool weather you've been getting. Should shake out nicely when it starts drying out. Erik

I agree with Eric. The cooler weather will slow nitrogen uptake and cause the yellowing. It should go away as things warm up and dry out.

Thanks guys. We have had temps well below average (up to 10 deg). Growth in just about everything has been slower than usual. Come on Wisconsin, it's June 23rd!

Low temps and waterlogged patch... causing a decrease in Nitrogen Uptake. See what happens this weekend when it dries out and gets some sun. Possibly a foliar application of Bloom Booster. Where in Wisconsin are you located

I had an issue with one of my plants. Cooler temps and rain caused nitrogen to get locked up. I'm not sure if this is good for you but I applied an application of 30-10-10. After a few days the plant responded quite well. The yellowing on the outer edges seemed to disapear.

Another round of fertilizer coupled with a string of warm and sunny days, and the yellowing has stopped. Both pumpkins are growing nicely now.
