Can someone tell me why you bury the secondary vines and what this benefits the pumpkin?? Thanks

You grow roots at each leaf node and burying the vine encourages this. The more roots the more you have feeding your plant and pumpkin.

Ditto. Not only that burying also anchors the vines down and helps support the plant durind heavy rains and winds.

If you don't bury you will just get one root per leaf node. If you bury you get two roots per node. (one comes out from the top of the vine and loops over to the ground.)

I miscalculated regarding burying this year. Everywhere I dig to get soil for burying I hit roots so i ended up having to buy soil to bury. i will get a load of compost next year for this purpose.
