Hi All! Well I moved from Washington to "sunny" (blazing hot) AZ last year, and figured my giant pumpkin growing days were over... BUT... you just cant keep a pumpkin grower down... and I have worked for a year on my new plot... and I think I have a shot in "hell" (pun intended) to break the AZ state record of 469. It wont happen this year as I just stuck to Cinderella pumpkins this season, but next year im ready to go for it. I still have that 1502 Wallace still and some 906 Dill 08's... Im in Northern AZ as well, so I have "cooler" temps than Phoenix. Just wanted to put it out there that im still in the game and a contender! Happy Growing!

Good luck Lil'Mac sounds like you are motivated to get that record.
I don't know what happened to Ben (hot pumpkin) I haven't seen him on here anymore. I believe he is the state record holder.

Good Luck with the attempt --- will be interesting to see how you can do - the heat and dry weather out here give you lots of new things to deal with but the genetics these days definitely should make it possible with the right seed and proper care. (Figure I got one to 320#'s in my first season growing last year with lots of mistakes and not the greatest soil with no shade or misting system - just plenty of watering throughout the day - so you should be able to do better !)

My personal best and last attempt was 948.... Sure was fun.... I think my diary is on here for it in 2009.

Mac, was wondering about your hail /shade protection set up, I can use all the ideas I can get.

What kind of hail/shade protection are you using and what kind are you talking about that it retracts just like home depot's? do they carry a netting that retracts?

Shazzy diary gave me alot of great ideas on setting my hail netting up, his can be set up in 15 minutes by ones self before a storm hits, and was wondering what kind of set up you had and the kind of cloth your using.

Hey Brooks! I noticed one day that the nursery section of home depot is set up with individual shade cloth panels that are on tracks so with a pole you just reach up and pull different panels back to let more or less light in and where you want it but can slide them closed easily as well. and the shade cloth I am using is the Coolaroo.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure hot pumpkin still holds the record. It was grown off of my seed, the 754 Fredricks. Ben did disappear, wonder where he went?

Team Faith, what was the genetics behind the 754 fredricks? A heat tolerant plant? and Wiz..... your funny. yes it takes a bit of money, but many great ventures worth doing do! Heck all my gardening ventures take money... you should see the final bill for my koi pond, actually even I dont want to know what it was, LOL, but when I backwash the koi filter, I get free fish poop water to irrigate!
