Who buries the whole vine verse just at the leaf node? Last year was my first year and i just buried at the node and it seemed to work fine.Im worried about rot if i bury the whole thing y/n But i have also read that buring the whole vine can help prevent the SVB ??? and i did have a problem with them last season?? I have 2 plants and guess i could do 1 each way and see what happens?? I just wanted to see how many bury the whole thing ?

Just bury the node..Spray the whole plant to protect against the SVB

I buried the whole main(2ndaries included) but really didn't "bury" it but just mounded some dirt over it somewhat and didn't have any rot issues at all. The svb monsters had me worried so I put enough dirt on them to keep them off the vines but a reasonable amount of air could get in and prevent the rot. Spraying for svb's is good too but I have read that they WILL find a spot with no protection(spray) and get in there. I split the difference and sprayed the vines...let them dry out...and then mounded dirt over lightly. Hope this helps. Its just what I did last year and it seemed to work for me. Erik

I bury the leaf nodes to ensure that the tap roots (both of them) form and grow. I've seen SVB in the pumpkins twice so far at various patch tours. The SVB will lay its eggs on the leaf stalk or underneith the leaves and the larve will eat its way into the leaf stalk and then eat its way through to the vines. Burying vines to prevent them from getting to the vines itsnt really going to help much. The best defense is being proactive, get the SVB traps, spray weekly, use a systemic insecticide to kill any larve that may chew on the plant.

I bury the entire vine. The anchor roots will help seat the plant down. During patch prep I say down the needed insecticide and haven't had any issues knock on wood.

I dig trenches (do it before the base gets out there(ie..don't cut roots :))d and bury both MV and secondaries 3-6"...keeping them in a trench also helps with wind, etc. I also then put Microriza(sp)in the trenches...the roots will go all over ..not just around the node area. Pumpkins root systems are HUGE. Good luck in 2011.
Note: My trench is the width of my shovel.

previous years i used soaker hoses which would prevent me from trenching.
Not this year.....im trenching and burrying them all.
Another good benefit of the Thad Star Layout over soaker hoses.
