My advice: cut your patch size to 1/4 that size you won't be able to properly care for that many plants.

Dan o...wanting to say "Book em"!!! and that would be a good start...Reading Don's Langevin's Books is a good starting point!!! Also, everything you need to know is right here on bp.com!!! Read, read, read!!! Then ask questions? Maybe new growers forum ? Peace, Wayne Ask specific questions and it might get you more specific answers!!!

agree with ORANGE NECK -----100 PERCENT
most times unless you are an EXPERIENCE AG GROWER and have lots of free time ? planting 8,000 sq ft of giant pumpkin plants will be a daunting task-unless of course you dont plant on training and working correctly on each plant.just letting a jungle take over the patch?
i would have suggested starting with three or four plants at most ,allowing 6-800 sq ft for each plant. train and ammend plants correctly. learn first then go bigger later on.
this is not an easy hobby. i have seen hundreds on this site come and go all because they expected immediate success, then became over extended and gave up. many things can and will go wrong in this hobby, and there are tons of things to learn. my advise would be to walk before you start running.you will last a lot longet in the hobby
best of luck pap

I'm a new grower this year but have spent well over a year doing what Phil D suggests....I've spend hours and hours pouring over posts on this message board, reading Don Langevin's books. I bought the DVD "Growing Giant Pumpkins SNGPG Style" and one of Joel Holland's DVD's and watched each of them many times. I've learned a ton of great information here, the best of the best regularly visit, some great growers have already responded to your post (you'll recognize their names as you become a regular visitor here). Regarding the size of your patch, I'm growing 3 plants on about 2400 sq ft and it is very difficult for me to properly manage watering, pruning, burying, wind protection, etc. I probably would be better off growing 2 plants this year (as was suggested to me by some veteran growers, I was just too excited). Experience is the best teacher but is the SLOWEST, unfortunately. Listen and learn from the folks here and it will shorten your learning curve by years.

I'M NEW THIS YEAR ALSO,I PLANTED 07 PLANTS AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS.MY PLANTS HAVE ONLY BEEN IN THE GROUND 11 DAYS AND I,M OUTSIDE AT LEAST AN HOUR AND A HALF WITH THEM NOW. ONCE THEY TAKE OFF I'M ONLY COCENTRATING ON THE TWO THAT ARE DOING THE BEST. THE OTHERS I WILL JUST WATER AND SEE WHAT I GET. LAST YEAR I DID FIELD PUMPKINS AND I GOT 02 THAT WERE APPROXIMATELY 60-70 POUNDS EACH. ALL I DID WAS WATER AND WEED. I JUST FILLED THE HOLE WITH MANUER AND LET THEM GO. SO GOOD LUCK THIS YEAR- I'M OPEN TO ADVICE. CAN BE EMAILED [email protected] THIS IS A VERY INVOLVED HOBBY AND I'M HOOKED ALREADY
