For the last 4 years or so I have been very lucky and only seen very little cuke beetles on my plants, and that all changed today, when I went out this morning to check out my plants there had to have been 50 to 100 dead cuke beetles(little yellow bug with black spots or stripes) on ''each leaf, on all my 5 plants''!!!

Lucky the Merit was working and the leaves survived with only a few small eaten places on my newer growth. if it wasnt for the Merit and Tal-star my plants would have looked like a machine gun hit them with out a doubt.

Any one else seeing these cukes in high numbers like I am?. Wonder why so many this year?

I think I read on bp.com somewhere that cuke beetles are on a cycle in certain areas?,,, maybe I'm seeing the heavy cycle in my area?,,

Brooks It has been a record year for them here. I have never seen so many. I am seeing less now that the weather has warmed up. We had a lot of snow cover this past winter, I wonder if that helped produce so many?

Last year at this time I had an outbreak of cuke beetles. They ate all my cuke plants they munched on every curcabit in the the garden and even ate every single sunflower seedling I had growing. Half way through the year I bought two packages of red assassin bug nymph's. They pigged out on everything. Only seed two this year so far. They got a liquid sevin bath and haven't seen any in a couple weeks. =)
I actually have not seen ANY insect pests in the garden this year yet except those two cuke beetles.

Beware. They may be harder to control because of your surrounding area. Check out my diary postings 6/10

Same with me, I had not seen any in about 4 years and 2 days ago, there they were. Maybe a total of 15 or so but thats 15 too many. Triazicide was already on the plants but did not seem to be working so orthomax did them in. None today. jeff

brotherdave, I don't believe that is a cucumber beetle in your photo. I have those here also, they are white and black instead of yellow - I think they might be a type of three-lined beetle. They definitely like that weed that you have pictured though. I freaked out for a momnet last year when I saw lots of them in my pumpkin patch AFTER I hoed all of the weeds. Their food was suddenly gone and they were on my pumpkin plants but they didn't eat them one bit.

Good catch pJ!!! I was sure you were wrong but after I quit panicing and caught one of the bug in question I confirmed your observation. "Pigweed flee beetle"

Yes brotherdave, that is it! I knew it looked different than the three-lined beetle but I was having a hard time finding a positive ID. Thanks!

I was fooled too I had the same thing. Had a good stand of pigweed next to my lope patch. There were swarms of them. I sprayed it with Talstar then pulled the pigweed once they were gone. I wondered why they were so preoccupied with the weed when they had such nice lopes to chew on.

I always did call both the striped black and yellow, and the doted black and yellow beetles cuke beetles, even though they aren't exactly the same bug.

but ya know what I think now that you guys mentioned the pig weed, Is that I have 9 acres of field that hasn't been cut for hay for about 3 years now, and if I was to take a good guess is to why I have so many 1000's of these Beetles this year, its because I have a gazillion pig weeds growing in the field now, the field borders most of my patch area. I'm definitely going to check my field out tomorrow and see if I have any of that weed growing.

Learn something every day, thanks a lot for that info about the pig weed.

Catch a few Brooks. The striped cuke beetle is yellow/green with a black belly, you may be able to find dead ones around your plants. The pigweed flee beetle has almost white stripes with a red belly with a black spot between their 2nd 3rd pair of legs. They were not bothering my lopes and no dead ones there either.

Guess you can't send 'em back over to wiz and biz now that there shields are up. You'll have to get them back for the cuke beattles some other way! lol Maybe you could overnight them some locusts.
