It seems I have planted my plant backwards - the main vine is heading in the wrong direction for my patch. Is it possible to train this vine to go in the other direction? I'm at about the 5 leaf stage and the vine hasn't laid down yet.

It happens. I have 2 doing that to me this year. Just move then gradually after they hit the ground and only in the afternoon so they don't break. I usually use a fiberglass electric fence post rod to direct the main where I want it to go. You can move it every day as needed.

Slowly and not too much at a time.

itg, if it isn't to late and the main vine is still in the air start leaning your entire plant back twards the way you want your main to run, gravity will take care of the rest.

I would like to share my growing experience, I learn from mistakes last season have a few pumpkin plants growing the wrong direction, I try 2 ways trial, the "U turn" best obtion, fallow the good advice above from Iovegian, Steve Z, Rob T.

1." The U turn " slowly each day take your time.
2. Lift the plant reposition this is the wrong way ( DO NOT LIFE YOUR PLANTS ) the plants will not do well "shock" fine roots been damage from lifting stress the plant, take a long time to recover, growing rate very slow , I learn from my mistake hope other growers will not have to make the same mistake that I make.
"Good luck" kenny.

ITG, leaning your main back the opposite way will not disturb your roots at all, no need for lifting your plant or worring about slow growth rate, Ive never had any of those type troubles by just leaning the main back the opposite way.
