Ok like a novice I used all my good compost to add to the patch right before what I though was my final till, then we had what seemed like 40 days and nights of heavy rain. After the patch dried enough to get the plants in the ground we continued to have days and nights of heavy rain and now my patch is hard as a rock on the surface and is cracking like the desert grounds. Two questions, first what can I buy or use to bury the vines that will benefit the plant like home made compost, I have Mycro, and worm castings, could i mix this with store bought bags of outdoor planting soil? Two is it safe to run the tiller around my plant now that the patch is dry enough to till? Currently the plant only has a main thats about a foot long, if so what would be a safe distance to keep from the plant while tilling 4-5 ft ?

Jim I mix castings, myco, and a couple of other things with my patch dirt and cover vines with that. I till out in front of the plant for as long as I can. I think if you stayed 4 ft away from the plants you would be fine at this stage. Later on is different.
I'm Sue from Brown County Ohio :)

Wayne, I thought Dwight Sloan -- or might have been JVH, someone down there in KY, had a line on bulk castings.
