I'm a new grower and I'm wondering what other growers have for vine growth this time of year. I know it will vary by region and growing zone. This has also been a cool spring, which will affect growth. I'm in zone 3b and I have 2 vines at 3ft and 2 at 2ft, 35 days after planting.

That seems pretty good to me. Mine haven't touched down yet. I planted my two main plants on May 6. I remember the first year I grew for competition. On July 1, the mainvine was under 4' long. The pollination occured on July 20, and I grew a 615 lb. pumpkin.

When consistent warm temps arrive, you can count on a 4' long main vine plant to at least grow 6" per day. Then once the female shows anywhere from about 8 to 12 days before opening depending on temp and the plant. My guess a 3' vine in good weather will be ready for a 12 foot pollution the last week in June.

I am growing mine on a mound of potting mix. Our soil is just too cold and wet. I got the pasture tilled once, but it hasn't dried out enough to till again. The mix is equal parts peat, perlite, pine bark, dairy manure compost, and yard waste compost. I'm going to start pushing fertilizer through drip lines as soon as our highs are above 70.

Shazzy, after reading this post, I put a stake down at the end of my healthiest plant last night. When I got up today it was a good 3.5 to 4 inches past the stake (not to mention what it adds on today.

Luke, I do it every year...just curious I guess!!! Put a small bamboo skewer at end of vine tip, and check growth after 24 hrs!!! Amazing, how...once these plants crank it up...they REALLY crank it up!!! Grow em BIG!!! Peace, Wayne
