I used a candle last year, on colder nights. The candles were about 3" in diameter. I put them in and empty soup can(with the lid off of course).

Use you imagination, candles work and so do heating tiles. It's a short period of time from now until frost free nights.

I don't know... I have a propane hand warmer I picked up at Sports Authority - with a small tank and it burns for several hours.

Its not good for humans in a closed space but the carbon monoxide may not affect the plants as much. I have something like the Coleman PowerCat which throws off 3000 BTUs and lasts about 6 hours on one canister.

I like Doug and Andy's idea with the candles. I'd leave a little hole for oxygen flow if your cold frame is small. Your neighbors might also wonder about your sanity when they look out back at 3am and see a small tent with burning candles in it.

See entry 33 in my diary, for my houses, worked last year,I added some blankets and tarps on top when it went real cold. I have heating cables in this year also. I can lower the light closer to basket also.

Yeah, I'd let those enclosures ventilate a bit before climbing in!
