My 1556 Werner seed germinated successfully a couple days ago, but when I checked it this morning, it had a small root growing out of the top of the seedcoat, which isn't fully above the dirt level yet. I'm wondering if this is a sign that it's getting rootbound within its own seedcoat.

strange happening. suggest gently removing the seedling from mixture-look to see if it truely has roots growing from top and bottom of seed ( it may just be the seed leaves popping out of the sides of the shell?)---and you have mistaken this for roots?

if it does have roots top and bottom? i would not count on planting it.

I carefully dug it up this morning to check, and it does have a full root system and first leaves starting to pop open the seedcoat. Here's an image of the seed... http://oi52.tinypic.com/2cfozo2.jpg

Interesting....it may be growing right along the cotyledon. If so, that should be O.K.

I'll wait till the seedcoat is off and take a look at it. I'm hoping it's just a small thing.

If your careful you can help it along by taking the seed coat off . Im with you Doug, it does look like the main root might be growing up along side the cots and out the top, it is something Ive never seen before.

The only thing that would worry me about waiting to see what the seed ends up doing is that if you wait to long the root that is sticking out of the top of the seed now might be already wrapped around your 2 cots to keep them from opening to get light,(espically if its a club root) and if that happens both cots end up dying from strangulation,,lol,,, then the roots die also.

Tough call to make on what to do with a seed like that Julian, espically it being a 1556 Werner seed, thats a great seed in my opinion, one seed that I wouldn't want to mess up from me doing something stupid to it and all i needed to do is just let it grow.... but then again, it might not be stupid to try taking the seed coat off,,

I know my post helps you none at all Julian, sorry..lol.

The more I think about it.... the more I couldnt stand looking at it like that and wait it out,,, Id have to open it up to see what the heck is going on inside,,bahaha!

PAP,

Do you remember that one year when someone had a seed that grew upside down in the pot?.. the roots all grew upwards to the top of the pot and then they grew out of the dirt into the air. I remember the grower had a really hard time with this seed in trying anything to get the roots to grow down like they should be growing.

Was that a seed you had, or someone else? Just wondering what ever happened to that seed and if it ended up getting yanked or maybe it turned itself around and grew something?

Anyone remember that post a few years back? It was like a one in a million for a seed to do that I expect.

The mutants are entertaining. Unless it is a really good seed. Then it is annoying.

Thanks Brooks, your post does help me think about it from a couple different standpoints. I removed it from the dirt again (last time I'm going to do that) and it looks like the stem started growing at is an acute angle to the roots, and it looks like one of the first lateral roots shot up through the very inside of the seedcoat. Assuming it's simply a lateral root, I'm thinking it might be a good idea to snip it before it becomes too invasive (or, as you said, remove the seedcoat). I just don't want to disturb the first leaves too much and risk them growing weird and preventing the first true leaves from starting out. So much to consider...

hey julian, if you look at this pic i posted above of a club root sending off multiple radical-like shoots so close to the seed coat corner, i can see how this might happen. not syaing you have a club root, but with the bend you described you can see where a small lateral root coming off the radical could slip under neath the shell if the angle was correct. i imagine it will be fine and the folded cots should protect the most vital area which is where the first true leaf forms. play it out and have backups ready either way.

Interesting shot Jeff. Well, I pulled the seedcoat off today and the entire seedling is rotted out. I'm kinda bummed, but it's all part of growing things.

Nice picture. That Vineman has the worst luck. Just read his grower diary.
