I wasn't even looking for them, but I happened upon this one while walking a trail. Just figured I'd double check with someone more experienced with mushroom hunting before I eat it. I know there's gotta be at least a few on here.

I'm no expert but from what I know of morel hunting, it would appear to be a real specimen. False morels have more wrinkly heads where true morels have a deep-ridged honeycomb structure.

Looks like one for sure. There are "False Morels" out there and to be sure slice it down the stem through the top and if the meaty part is hollow you are fine. If it is not hollow, don't eat it.

A wise man once explained to me some basic ethics of collecting Chantrell mushrooms, That when harvesting fungus you should always use a knife rather than digging or pulling from ground? This allows fungus to remain and flourish for future harvests, if you can remember the location. DBH

With all the rain lately, will the mushroom crop be bigger than normal? 2nd ? where do you look for Morel's...around certain types of trees, or any specific locations...or just luck? All help appreciated!! Peace, Wayne

Wayne I haven't hunted any around here, but on the family farm the location in central Ohio there is an old over grown pasture, dry branch(probably not too dry right now) and large sycamore trees. Once you get past the briars and prickly stuff and get to the branch I'd look on the north side 10 to 30 foot from the branch. Oh , Ijust remembered I'm going there next weekend......Happy Mother's Day!
