As I flip through this years group of growers diaries I have been seeing more and more pictures of planting pits with soil heating cables placed in them. If I may throw out a bit of advise that I too use. Once your cables are in take a look at the bottom of your pit. They look like a sidewalk. All compacted. We take great care in making sure we don't compact the soil. Take a pitch fork once your done and losen back up the dirt in the hole a bit. This will help with drainage and root development.

agreed, 5150. I actually did what you suggested, had dug down to my hardpan clay to bury the cable, then used a spade fork to "fluff" the clay a bit. when I backfilled the hole I had gained several inches in height and made a nice mound to put a plant in
