What do you do when it rains so much that you might not be able till your patch in time to plant?

I'm a total newbie NP, so take this for what it's worth....but I dug a hole to put my heating cable in my patch last Sunday during a break in the rain and shoveled the soil onto a large tarp. As the afternoon went on, I noticed that the soil on the tarp did dry out some, so I added some mico, bloodmeal, bonemeal, kelp, and humic acid to just that soil and backfilled over my cable with it. Two days with it protected from the elements inside my hut, along with the heating cable, made the soil at least workable. The rest of the patch is a train wreck but I figure I'll just till it once my plant outgrows its hut.

That is an interesting idea. I might try it if it is still wet the first week of may when I plan on planting.

If its real wet your hut better be big,if we get enough rain it will flood the hut, water seeks its on level!

milford, CT,

A few years ago we had a terrible month of April-May 5th..Rain..Don't try to work wet soil..not a good thing to do..If you have to wait and plant a week later it is better than planting in a mud environment.

I agree with that. Seeing the patch looking like a muddy mess is so unmotivating. I was able tp get most of it tilled before the rain but more tilling is required.

what i forgot to mention in my first post was that we had an extremely windy day here in PA when I buried my heating cable, gusts frequently up to 40-50 mph, and that certainly helped with some drying of the soil I had piled on my tarp.
