I was thinking of spreading amendments in my greenhouse,1000 sg feet with a shovel(turning over) instead of tiller!would that be as good as tiller for mixing, plus I need to loose that winter fat!lol. Were talking humate, kelp meal,Azomite,Aragonite,Any thought here? If I spark up the tiller I have to open house,or they will be throwing me in the compost pile.lol Tom,Don,any pros out there??

i personally dont think tilling your soil 1 or 2 times is gonna hurt your soil.

Just my thoughts. I think it would do the same job just so long as you get the 4 inches turned over. I did that last week to my patch and I have confidence that its all good.

Turning your amendments into the soil once with a shovel won't be nearly as effective at getting them well mixed in as a good tilling. You would probably have to go over it 2 or 3 times to get it mixed in as well. I no longer have a tiller so I do a lot of shoveling.

Broad Fork is the best for turning Soil. Tilling is a harsh mixing/beating of the soil..Although I still till to incorporate all the organic matter

Yup I'm in John's camp. Grip it rip it (rototiller that is). Till it up and stop worrying. Following your tillering with sugars, compost teas and beneficial's will undo any harm you've just caused.

I like adding worms John. Whoohooo, that's a gooooood idea!!!!

Mark, I like tilling for the larger jobs but use my Garden Claw Gold for incorporating ammendments, loosening soil and that kind of thing. Works awesome in the hoophouse! Had mine for years and use it every year without fail!!
