Hi my fried came over today with his bobcat and we expanded the patch, about 2 feet under there is this black fine dirt? It looks and feels like coffee grounds. What is it? This is also only my second year growing so I have not put anything on top of this to turn what's underneth into compost. Any info would be great thanks. Paul in Warren, PA.

Hard to tell. It this an area that was leveled off in the past? The original topsoil could have been buried. Or is it an area that gets silt deposition from uphill. I see lots of places that have a good black topsoil that is buried in silt. The coffee ground texture is puzzling.

My backyard runs down hill so I'm bringing dirt from top down to get more of a level ground for the patch.

Do a soil test. Found some black soil once while grading a job. Kept 2 dumptruck loads of it. It won't hardly grow weeds. The PH was way off. So just because it's black, that don't mean it's fertile. Hope yours is.
