I've been told by a Stihl dealer these are discontinued. The bigger 450 just doesn't seem like a great option for a guy with 5000 sqft. Anyone know of a dealer with a 420 in stock?

I'd suggest a used one on ebay. I have beat the living crap out of mine (purchased in 2002), and it still starts on the first or second pull. As little as you use it, a good used one should last for a long long time. If I was buying one now, I would go to a stihl dealer and see if they can still order the sprayer attachment for a BR 420 to convert it to an SR 420. If you can get that, you can pick up a used one on ebay for something around 300 bucks.

this link may be old, but worth giving them a call.

I bought a Hudson last season....I feel its made kind of cheap, but sprays further then i'll ever need. If I could go back a year, I would have spent another $150 and got the Stihl.

Chris, here's a link to Stihl's USA dealer locater: http://stihldealer.net/locator/
I had to search around quite a bit to find a 420 here in Vermont/New York, but I did.
Also, try rental places. They sometimes have brand-new 420's in stock.

Making your own is really easy and can be done for around $100-150 in less than an hour. Clearly it isn't as professional looking as a Stihl, but it works very well. The mist comes out very fine and can be blown a long distance if you want. With the valve wide open I can dump a gallon of product in under a minute.

If you have a air compressor you can make one for about 20 bucks,,, I have my home made one and it works great! just as good 'if not better" then the ones you would buy online, the only down side is you have an air hose and water hose that you'll have to pull around with you, but for me that's no big deal,
