I grew a pumpkin that had good genetics, I'm just wondering why the vines were small, or thin. Does vine size make a difference?

for the most part rich the answer would be no. however there are exceptions----- it has been my experience that plants which have access to excessive fertalizers and especially excess nitrogen will develope those huge wrist sized main vines. id think a normal main would be a bit larger than a garden hose ( around 1- inch ), while an over fertalized, high nitrogen rich soil will produce a fire hose.
